Course Description
Out-of-school time offers opportunities for learning that are distinctly different than the school day. Turning those opportunities into dynamic, effective programming requires a special set of skills, whether applied to afterschool, before school, or summer programming. This course will provide practical techniques to put theories of learning into action, spark youths’ interest, and support academic and social skill-building using non-formal methods. The approach will model processes of participatory learning and reflective practice, including instructional demonstrations, discussion and hands-on activity, and a final group project.
Objectives
- Understand the concept of out-of-school time learning as the use of non-formal, experiential methods to support in-school learning and youth development, and to deliberately link in-school and out-of-school content
- Demonstrate the ability to plan practical afterschool activities or projects that embed academic content and youth development principles.
- Be able to use a range of assessments of academic learning and youth development to guide programming
- Gain knowledge of and demonstrate techniques for program evaluation and developing continual improvement plans
